TENANTS HARBOR — Carus David Haupt, better known as Cary, passed away on January 12, 2024 after battling a prolonged illness.
He was born in Frackville, Pennsylvania on Jan 7, 1937, and in 1954 graduated from Kennett High School, Kennett Square, Pennsylvania. He was the second youngest of six brothers and sisters (Charles, Flo, Charlotte, Roy and Lee). Cary was strongly attached to all his family. He had two daughters with his first wife, Doris Shivery. They are Terry Augerot and Paige Marra.
In the years that followed high school, Cary had a rich and fulfilling life. It began in the Marines, then as an Estate Manager, a Pennsylvania Game Warden and years later as a Maine Guide.
In 1990 Cary moved to Tenants Harbor, Maine and in 1993 he married former high school classmate, Barbara Churchman. Cary and Barbara had many adventures in the years together. They bred, raised, hunted, competed and judged their field bred spaniels (primarily English Cockers) all over the U.S., a few even in Cananda. In 2000 they traveled to England to observe field trials there. The highlight of that trip was watching and walking with the Queen at Sandrigham Estate. Having that experience and raising their many cockers was the icing on the cake for Cary. He loved his dogs and was also deeply involved with family.
In the Summer it was normal for family members to spend time in Maine. Four of the six siblings even lived on Haupt Road in Tenants Harbor for a time. Every five years the Haupts gathered there for a family reunion. Cary was so loved by his family and his close friends. He was kind, he listened quietly, he set an example and he was always witty. Cary and his one liners will never be forgotten.
He is survived by his loving wife Barbara; his daughters Terry and Paige; stepdaughter Kathleen LeBree; grandchildren William Augerot, Peter Augerot, Benjamin Marra; step grandchildren, Mike Hawkins, Christine Hawkins, Kyle Weaver and Ryan Hawkins; and great granddaughter Olivia Day.
The family is planning for a celebration of Carys life sometime in the Summer.
